Öves (Kotansky Version)

These notes ©2017, Andrew Carnie. Originally taught by Steve and Susan Kotansky. Steve learned this dance from Ferenc Sára in Budapest This dance comes form the Csángo people of Moldova, in Romania. The Csángo people are Hungarian speakers.

Meter: 2/4
Formation: Open circle, hands down in V position (Kotansky's notes say that it is a closed circle in basket hold, but we've always done it in V position). Leads to the right.
Introduction: 12 bars. Start with the bagpipe

Part 1

Bar 1: Facing center, Step on R to R (1), Step on L behind R (2)
Bar 2: Step on R to R (1), Kick L foot forward low (2)
Bar 3: Step on L to L (1), Kick R foot forward  low (2)

Part 2

Bar 1: Facing center, Step on R to R (1), Step on L behind R (2)
Bar 2: Step on R to R (1), Step on L in front of R (2)
Bar 3: Step on R to R (1), Kick L foot forward low (2)
Bar 4: Step on L to L (1), Kick R foot forward  low (2)

Part 3

Bar 1: Facing LOD, run R (1), L (2)
Bar 2: repeat bar 1
Bar 3: facing center, jump on both feet (1), kick L forward low (2)
Bar 4: jump on both feet (1), kick R forward low (2)

Part 4

Bar 1: Facing LOD, run R (1), L (2)
Bar 2: repeat bar 1
Bar 3: facing center, jump on both feet at shoulder width apart (1), Hop on R and Cross L over R, no weight (2)
Bar 4: jump on both feet at shoulder width apart (1), Hop on L and Cross R over L, no weight (2)

Interlude

Bar 1: Facing LOD, run R (1), L (2)
Bar 2: repeat bar 1

Part 5

Bar 1: With feet together, twist heels to the R (1), Twist heels to L (2)
Bar 2: Facing center, Step on R to R (1), Step on L behind R (2)

Bar 4: Jump on both feet together (1), Lift R up behind L calf (2)
