These notes ©2018, Andrew Carnie. Originally taught by Sonia Dion and Cristian Florescu. The dance is made up of two bits a Brâul (Briul) and a De Doi. The dance is from Banat.
Music: Romanian Realm #6. Sonia and Cristian Workshop CD
Meter: Brâul 7/16 counted as SQQ; De Doi: 2/4
Formation: Trios, traditionally one man with 2 women. Start in a small circle. Holding hands in V position.
Introduction: 8 bars, start with panflute
Dance # 1: Brâul (Brîul)
Part 1:
Bar 1: Step R to R (S), Close L next to R with weight (QQ)Bar 2: Step R to R (S), Touch L next to R, no weight (QQ)
Bars 3-4: Repeat bars 1-2 with opposite footwork and direction
Bar 5: Turning to face LOD, Step on R in LOD (S), touch L next to R (QQ)
Bar 6: Step L in LOD (S), Touch R next to L (QQ)
Bars 7-8: Step R (S), L (QQ), R (S), in LOD, and face center and touch (QQ) [Sonia and Cristian's notes say to repeat bars 1-2]
Bars 9-16: repeat bars 1-8 with opposite footwork and direction
Part 2
Bar 1: Facing slightly R of center Step on R slight to R (S), Čukče on R, with a small CW rond de jambe with L foot (Q), Cross L over R (Q)Bars 2-3: Repeat bar 1, two more times.
Bar 4: Facing center Step R to R (S), Slap L foot flat foot forward (QQ)
Bar 5: Step L next to R, with a slight twist to L, kicking R foot forward (S), Step R in place, kicking L foot forward low (Q), step L in place, Kicking R forward L (Q) [Scissors]
Bar 6: Repeat bar 5 opposite footwork
Bar 7: Repeat bar 5
Bar 8 Repeat bar 4
Bars 9-16: repeat bars 1-8 with opposite footwork and direction
Alternate parts 1 and 2 three more times. The last time through gradually close into a circle
Dance # 2: De doi
Introduction: (Done replacing the first part of part 1 the first time through)Bar 1: Facing center Step R to R (1), Step L near R (2)
Bar 2: Step R to R (1), Touch L next to R (2)
Bars 3-4: Repeat bars 1-2 with opposite footwork and direction
Bars 5-8: Repeat bars 1-4
Part 1
Bar 1: Run RLR (1&2) in placeBar 2: Run LRL (1&2) in place
Bar 3: Step on R in LOD with a deep knee bend (1), Step L in LOD (2)
Bar 4: Repeat bar 1
Bars 5-8: Repeat bars 1-4 with opposite footwork and direction,
Bars 9-16: Repeat bars 1-8, except on bars 15 & 16 open up to a line
Note: the first time though the dance you only do bars 9-16 (opening up) because the introduction replaces the first 8 bars.
Part 2
Bars 1-2: Repeat the footwork of bars 1-2 of part 1, Women turn slightly towards M on bar 1, and away from M on bar 2.Bars 3-4: Repeating the footwork of bars 3-4 of part 1, Women turn under hands joined with M. Woman on left turns CW, Woman on R turns CCW (i.e. towards partner)
Bars 5-8: Repeat bars 1-4 with opposite footwork, except W turn away from M on bar 1 and towards him on bar 2. And women turn the opposite direction from bars 1-4 (i.e. away from partner, or RW turns CW, and LW turn CCW.
Bars 9-12. Using the same footwork as bars 1-4; the M makes a 1/2 turn to R, Raising R hand. following the LW through the arch formed with the RW. End facing away from center.
Bars 13-14: Using the same footwork as bars 5-6; repeat bars 9-12, except raising L hand and following the RW under arch.
Bars 15-16: Using the same footwork as bars 7-8: repeat bars 3-4
